Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

We specialize in the evaluation and treatment of traumatic brain injuries (TBI), addressing the complex challenges that affect cognition, emotion and daily function. Our approach combines advanced science with personalized care to promote recovery, resilience and long-term quality of life.

A Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a disruption of normal brain function caused by an external force, such as a blow, jolt or injury to the head. It can range from mild concussions to severe injuries that cause long-term cognitive, physical or emotional impairments.

Common Symptoms

Common symptoms of a traumatic brain injury include:

  • Headaches or migraines
  • Difficulty concentrating or remembering information
  • Fatigue or changes in sleep patterns
  • Mood swings, irritability, or depression
  • Dizziness or balance problems
  • Sensitivity to light or sound
  • Slowed thinking or difficulty processing information

Our Diagnostic Process

Traumatic brain injury is diagnosed through a combination of medical history, physical and neurological exams, and imaging tests such as CT scans or MRIs, which help determine the location, type, and severity of the injury.

  • Clinical evaluation
In-depth discussion of symptoms, injury history and functional challenges
  • Neurocognitive testing
Standardized assessments measuring memory, attention, executive functioning and processing speed
  • Advanced diagnostics
High-resolution brain imaging—such as MRI—to identify injury patterns and rule out secondary causes
  • Longitudinal tracking
Ongoing monitoring to assess recovery, measure progress and guide treatment adjustments over time

Frequently asked questions

What types of brain injuries do you treat?

We evaluate and treat concussions, moderate and severe TBIs, post-traumatic headaches, and long-term cognitive or emotional changes after head injury.

Do all TBIs show up on scans?

Traumatic Brain Injuries do not always show up on scan. Many mild TBIs or concussions may not appear on standard imaging, which is why we use advanced diagnostics and neurocognitive testing to evaluate subtle changes.

What will my first visit to Salma Health for a brain injury be like?

Your first visit includes a detailed discussion of your symptoms and injury history, a neurological and cognitive evaluation, and, if indicated, advanced imaging. Together, we’ll outline a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Can TBI symptoms improve over time?

Yes. Many patients experience recovery over weeks to months, though some symptoms may persist. With the right therapies and support, significant improvement is possible even long after your initial injury.

Do you coordinate care with other providers?

Yes. With your permission, we collaborate with your primary care doctor, neurologist, therapist, or rehabilitation team to ensure seamless care.
